Default P0705 Trans Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction

I have a 2000 S40 and I have the tranny code 0705. I have been to aamco and another mechanic. One says it needs to be rebuilt and the other told me it costs $700 to remove the transmission from the vehicle and look "inside" the transmission to see whats wrong. I have the flashing up arrow on my dash and sometimes my car drives in a lower gear where I feel some hesitation when I accelerate. Has anyone else experienced these issues? I was under the impression that this code meant there was a malfunction in the park neutral position (PNP) switch but I have a feeling that these mechanics are trying to get over on me. Why would I get this code if the problem is not the actual switch. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Your 2000 S40 has the four speed automatic and I'm guessing you have a few miles on the car? You can try flushing the fluid by draining and following the flush method on the Volvospeed web site. Unfortunately you will probably need the transmission rebuilt. Looking inside the trans for $700 is not worth the trouble and most likely will be about what it costs to replace it with one from the salvage yard. Sludge that builds up inside the transmission can cause problems with shifting especially second to third.

The first thing is to erase the code to see if it returns. Check the wiring harness to make sure it's still connected and not damaged in some way.

Next I'd price the gear range selector sensor (used if you can find one). If the code returns consider replacing the sensor first.

If all else fails try finding a lower mileage trans from a wrecked car. Another option is a reman unit from one of the big trans suppliers.

$700 just to look? Run away......
