Our s40 2006 2.4 has this code P081C along with the message:
Starter Disable Circuit Low
Anyone have a suggestion on where to look?

the code says its a "park input circuit" which suggests something in the shifter to transmission connection is not right. Does your shifter have console lights or any other signs of an open circuit? Can you get into/out of park and other gears? does the car turn over? If not, try doing a shifter row (to clean up the PNP switch), then try turning on the key to start with the headlights on high (dunno why but this was posted as a work around for a Land Rover!).
