Default Parts compatability

I have a 2004 S40. What years use the same alternator? Where would I look up the compatibility so I don't need to ask these questions?

Thanks,
SARR

I usually do a couple things - go to a dealer web site like volvopartswarehouse.com or tascaparts.com and use their catalog to find the OEM part number then search on that. Another resource is car-parts.com (used parts finder) put in your make and ask for compatible parts and see what other years list out. Finally use a web site like FCPEURO, and click on the Fitment tab. BTW, for a 2004 you are either a Gen1 (compatibility is usually 2000-2004 S40/V40 for altnerators) or a gen 2 - the 5 cylinder shares the alternator with 2005-2007 - maybe even more...
