pod air filter
Hi all
I know this has been discussed to death but i need to kno before I put this mod on my 00 s40 t4.
Does fitting a K&N filter attached to the stock afm cause the car to run lean due to the afm not being able to sense properly the huge amount of air being sucked into the intake?
this is what happened to my last car (subaru) and it had an aftermarket computer so i had it retuned.
Also would fitting a fully atmospheric bov cause the car to backfire and stall? I had my subie retuned for that too...
Cheers

Im not an expert, but I think it adjusts for how much air is flowing over the sensor, not just telling the computer that there is more air than normal flowing thru.
Also, I had a BOV on a modified Eclipse and never had a problem with backfiring or stalling. My stock S60 R backfires now and then and its not modified

Thanks for your help guys.
I think I'm going to run the car on a dyno to get a baseline reading, then pull the airbox off to see how the computer adjusts and if the a/f ratio is maintained. If all good then, will install the K&N which should make some nice forced induction noises. Its all about the noise!!
s60R... backfiring stock, how awesome is that!! I wish my s40 would sound like a rally car.
being in Australia certainly makes modifying an s40 difficult.

Yeah, it is pretty cool!!
I hope the below links can help. On the second one, go to the bottom of the page for a pic. Not sure of the application for your car, but maybe its a start. This site calls them dump valves

s60r thanks for the link, its just given me an idea as to how to fit my bov... or dump valve as you guys call it. Here in australia we have different names for everything
Will let you know how i go with the valve after i install it on the weekend. the pod filter will require a bit more thinking (ie with flange connecting to pod and heatshield...)

Just by way of an update, I fitted a blitz super sound blow off/dump valve on the weekend. Funny having a jap performance part on a euro....
I placed used a replacement pipe for the hose from the turbo heading to the intercooler. So the bov pretty much releases a hot charge of air just after the turbs. Not sure if this is the best place but installed it for simplicity cos i didn't have to hack factory stuff.
the result... nice whoosh noise for gear changes above 3000rpm and no idle problems (prob cos the factory recirc valve is still present).
worthwhile modification? for performance value, no, for sound value... do it!!
Now to start thinking about the pod filter for sucky induction noises...

Hi S60R
It didn't take long at all. The bov was actually off a Toyota Soarer. The bov sat on a flange which was attached to a custom pipe perpendicular to it. The only problem is that the bov faces upwards and shoots hot air to a shroud of wires and the underside of the bonnet.
I chopped down the pipe to fit and use silicon bends and hoseclamps to connect it all up. A simple t-piece to a vac line and hey presto... whoosh...
Should prob take a few photos but my camera phone is stuffed.
