Default Question about fuel filter change

I have Volvo S40 1998 diesel and have replaced original fuel filter with fuel filter from Golf (every component of it). Does that influence work of the engine, since engine itself is increasing RPM. Is the different fuel filter cause of this.

Normally a fuel filter won't cause a problem unless it's installed backwards. Does the filter have arrows painted on it? Are the arrows pointing toward the engine?

Thanks for the reply Its installed correctly, maybe its not related to my problem. Basically my problem is that the car while standing still and in no gear he sometimes increases RPM by himself.
