question on s40 reliability
Hi
I am considering a used S40, I live in Australia. The phase 1 model was released in 1997, and was updated to Phase 2 in 2000. The M series(new styling) was brought in in 2004.
I am looking at a 2003 Phase 2 normally aspirated 2.0L 5 sp automatic.
My question is simple, are there any years/models/engines to avoid? How does the reliability compare to a Japanese car, assuming the Volvo has been serviced by the book? I had a 2004 XC90 T6, got rid of it at low mileage as I was concerned about tranny problems down the track. Is the S40 a better bet, or would you say the S60 has been more reliable in your experience? Thanks

That is true about Toyota and to a lesser extent,Honda.. I would accept some drop in reliability and an increase in maintenance costs for a Eurocar, but only to an extent. I would pick the Japanese cars if they were as safe, but despite the crash test ratings that show them to be just as good as the Eurocars, I think the Eurocars still feel more substantial. Thanks
I have a 2004 S40 and had it for 2 years now. I have never had any problems with it. I drive highway a lot when I go to school, and I usually get around 34 mpg. I couldn't ask for anything more from this car!

Have an '03 S40 with over 244k miles on it. I've stuck with the maintenance to the mile and have had no probs with engine, tranny, anything major... Just replaced rear struts and springs. Get about 32mpg on the highway.
I think with any vehicle if you stick with the maintenance, it should last you for years. I know it's not fun shelling out $600 or so for a 'recommended' maintenance, but it's worth it in the end... RON

Thanks for the replies. Coming from a reliable 1997 Honda accord with 135000kms only, it is a hard decision, especially as I know the maintenance costs would be higher with the S40. The Accord only has ABS brakes and a driver's airbag, not much else safety-wise. We shall see.
