My daughter was driving my 2001 Volvo S40 and she let the gas tank go to empty. Wouldn't start. So I put in a gallon of new gas from a gas can, and it started, but I had to pop it into drive at a high rev to get it to go without stalling. Every red light I hit, car stalls.

Please tell me she didn't just cause hundreds of dollars of damage by letting the gas tank empty completely.

 

The fuel pump is actually cooled by the fuel in the tank, therefore when you run out of gas the fuel pump can get too hot and burn itself up.

There is a possibility that your fuel pump is bad.

 

Thanks for your response...bad news, but at least it points me in a direction. Sounds expensive...wish she had just put some gas in.
