My catalytic converter has gone on my 2009 S40 and needs to be replaced ASAP !! Can anyone tell me if I can get a good after market one or does it have to be a genuine volvo part in order for the engine light to reset ? Thanks

 

Are you getting the trouble code for the "Cat Converter efficiency below threshold"? This is normally a bottom O2 sensor problem. Both O2 sensors should be replaced every 100k miles as a maintenance item and most of us (me included) don't want to spend the cash. The bottom O2 sensor's sole job is to report on the cat convertor. If the sensor is bad then you get the error message even if the cat is working fine.

In my state there are no emissions testing so it's possible to add a spacer to the bottom O2 sensor that effectively eliminates the problem.

In states with testing this may be noticed by an inspector. YMMV.
