S40 engine B5244S7(VIN 39) and B5244S4(VIN 38), are they transferable?
I have a 2005 S40 2.4i non turbo VIN 39. The engine blew back in January and I am trying to find a used engine to replace it.
What is the difference between engine B5244S7 and B5244S4?
I would like to find out if the engine from a 2004 S40 2.4i non turbo VIN 38 is compatible? What if any modification would be needed?
Thank you!

Blown engine
The 39 engine code designates a PZEV engine which qualifies for the 15 year/150k mile emissions warranty. Unfortunately that doesn't cover a blown engine or in my case, a failed connecting rod bearing. Please let me know if you came up with any engine replacement options. I have an 05 V50 with the same engine as yours, but replacement even with a used engine approaches the value of the vehicle.

I don't know the answer. I did look up the 2 engines in VIDA and noticed that the S4 and S7 were both listed as options for the 2005 model year. Here are some specs. They look identical on the outside.

Best to start your own thread - you've commented on a very old thread without stating what your question is. A good place to start is by reading the Volvo Modular Engine WIKI and reading up on SULEV. The wiki has some basic details on the blocks and the version number changes. VIN 38 refers to the B5244S4 and VIN 39 refers to the B5244S7. As noted the S7 is the California SULEV+ variant but the block specs are the same. There's nothing on the Wiki to suggest there's different compression so my guess is the differences are in the engine management, evap and PCV system components, catalytic converter, possibly some heat transfer coatings on things like radiators etc. So what is it that you want to do - ie swap a 39 long block into a 38 car or vice versa or are you talking about buying a 38 engine car to replace a current 39?
