S40 Quality question?
Im Looking at purchasing a 2006 Volvo s40 (2.4L) for $8700 from a person I know. I was looking at the MSRP for the S40 and its around 25k. Isnt that cheap for a luxury car? Seems so compared to a BMW 325i etc. Its a beautiful looking car, I just want to make sure Im getting something well built. Thanks all!

I bought the same car last summer for just under $16K. The asking price for yours is really a bargain. This model is the entry level version, so the new vehicle price is pretty reasonable -- although, I think the '09s are a bit higher than $25K. As you can see, though, the depreciation is really steep.
My car feels and drives like well-built car. However, if you snoop around on this board and others, you may begin to wonder about Volvo's quality control. Even Consumer Reports deems it a "used car to avoid" due to its below average record of reliability.
All that stated and acknowledged ... I love my s40! It drives great, has killer looks, is very comfortable, and is not a common car.
I don't think I'd buy this car new, but at the asking price you're facing, I don't see how you can lose. That's an amazing deal (too good to be true??).
Good luck with your decision!

I have an '06 S-40. I also have an 05 XC90. The S-40 is a very nice car. I am very happy with both. I drive the big one and love it. My wife drives the S40. She had 2 3 series BMW's before buying the S40. Having driven all three, I can speak to your question. The quality of the S40 compares favorably to the BMW. There is a power difference with the normally aspired 2.5 vs the BMW, but it's still peppy enough. the S40 runs and handles like a dream. I have no service issues (52,000) I'm friends with a service foreman at a volvo dealer and he agree's that the S40 is the best product that Volvo makes. PS If you don't want it, I'd like the opportunity to buy it, so let me know what you're doing. Tony
The S40's are great looking an driving little Volvos! You're stealing that car! Average car price for that is mid 13k. Clean book is in the 15's... Though, Average book wholesale (at dealer auction) is about $8,900 and clean book wholesale maybe 10k.. Man, buy it and if you don't like it you WILL make your money back!
I'm over from the 740 board since we adopted Grandma's '92 Brick. I'm also in the market for a new(old) car. I never considered a Volvo. I do all our service/repair work.
My criteria:
Small(er) type car
AWD (live in northern NY)
Good handling (41 mile each way commute. Mountains, twistys, interstate, back roads, town)
Stick shift
Decent milage (don't need /want blistering speed/power)
My wife is addicted to Audis. I've been driving Saabs because they came to me. Am considering a TT, 325ix, maybe A4, maybe front drive Saab. I never considered an S40 or S60. I like the less common part. I like the stealthy part. Great looking.
I am a double clutching driving enthusiest/car freak and have been for 35 years.
Will I get my car jollies with an S40 T5....? What options do I need? Can I make it sound as awesome as our old Audi 90 (5 cyl.)?
Thanks, C.
