S40 Radiator / Oil Cooler

My son's 2000 S40 continues to have problems... The latest is yesterday it started spewing steam from the overflow bottle. He brought the car over, and I see there is oil in the coolant. Unfortunately, the registration is currently due, and it needs a smog check. We can't get it in for a smog check like it is, it will overheat and not allow the full test. This car has had numerous & continuous problems, and I'm not really interested in throwing much more money into it. At 139000 miles, it appears to be pretty much worn out. I've been told that the radiator has an integral oil cooler, and that could be the problem versus a blown head gasket or cracked head. Any truth to this? It's raining heavily, my garage is full of other cars, and I can't get to it for a few days. If it needs more than a couple hundred dollars, we'll just part it out or junk it.
