Default Shifter on PRNDL bulb replacement on a s40

I am going to replace the shifter or PRNDL bulb on my 2002 Volvo s40. It costs about $ 3.00 to buy it. However, one dealer said that I must also buy the socket and wire for the bulb. That increases the price to $ 17.00.

Is this right, it can't be right because of the increased cost?

I am still thinking of a $ 3.00 bulb, not a $ 17.00 one.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

I replaced mine and all I needed was the light bulb. You can easily access it simply by removing the footwell side panel and reaching upwards.

Here is a partial guide that I put together for the same job:

As I recall I actually got the bulb from Mazda instead of Volvo. I was told that I could get them cheaper there. Turns out they gave it to me for free. Almost had me looking to buy a Mazda for a few minutes there. Best to take the bulb out and bring it in to compare as a first step
