Default starting issue

well after replacing the oil filter box, the fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs. and removing the alarm box (possible battery drain per a shop) from the under the cowl on the passenger side.

the car started then stalled out and it now it won't start.

I pressed the pressure release at the end of the rail and no gas came out.

the question is fuel issue or the alarm unit?

2005 S40 I4

thanks
Paul

I'd plug whatever you removed related to the alarm back in.

Next step - scan for any codes in all control units, record and erase. Check fuel pressure (check for gas in tank first) Check timing belt integrity and for spark at a spark plug. Check for injector pulse.

put alarm box back, that wasn't it. put old fuel pressure sensor back, nope wasn't that, (but gas was present), it has spark. and I regapped pugs to.028 from .044-.050

still nothing just turns over. sigh

injector pulse? I'll have to look that up.

Quick way to test if it's a fuel issue - a short squirt of starter fluid (though IIRC even WD40 will work in a pinch) in the air box, and if the engine fires for a few seconds, you know you have a fuel issue. If not, look for spark / compression or timing problems.

fuel? the rail had fuel in it, hasn't that ruled out a fuel issue? and I know I have spark? why would I have timing problems? all I did was changed the oil trap and plugs?

I'm tempted to put the old plugs back in, they were the iridium ones (4 contacts) replaced with what I was told was OEM with single.

Fuel in the rail is not the same as fuel reaching the cylinders (injectors have to be commanded on). If you've verified you have a strong spark, it's either a fuel problem or you have a compression or timing issue.

Of course, the "injector problem" could be something not directly related to the injectors themselves, but something else (electrical, most likely).

But I'm confused - you said that you pressed the release button on the fuel rail and nothing comes out, but you're sure you have fuel pressure?

what is odd to me is after I swapped everything out, it started then stalled out. and hasn't been able to start.

I put the old pressure unit back in and gas came out. hence gas in the rail. I haven't tried the starting fluid yet.

codes, well before all of this started it was ecm 250a & 261a

don't know, can I get codes without it running? and I'll have to find a tool for the fuel pressure.

the unit I just rented says 0 pressure. I also am wondering if the bottom ECM connector might be the issue. I can't get the handle to latch!

Turn on the ignition - you should hear the fuel pump priming. If not, check to see if you're getting power to the pump.

I'm not sure if the Volvo alarm system interrupts the ignition or fuel pump, but I'm betting the latter, and I'd wager that something you did messed that up. Double-triple check your work.

removed seats hoping I could access pump there vs dropping tank, I have to drop the tank! sigh!

I don't hear the pump, never noticed it before either. then the question is: is it the pump or pem? I know the last time it was the pem it would run for 30 seconds and die.

I also got some starting fluid and sure enough it started/caught.

also the fuse is fine for the fuel pump.

What engine do you have? (you have "2005 s40 I4" listed) Do you have a 4 or 5 cylinder engine? and turbo or not?

Here's a wiring diagram. Your car does have a fuel pump relay. But before I would delve into that stuff - I would make sure everything you touched previously is correctly installed.

so it has a fuse and relay? I'll have to check for that. how do you verify a relay is good?

I did check and it is good. it's actually just a fuse, unless it's not documented.
but this is what is in the manual
74 Fuel pump relay 15A
