Starting problem and gas smell
Hi:
My S40 is having problems starting in the morning. It takes about 5 seconds (and sometimes trying two times) before it starts. It smells a little like gas whenever I try to turn on the car. If I turn off the car and wait about 1 hour it will presents the same simptoms. Why is the fuel injection system losing its pressure so fast? The car is almost 90K. How likely is that the fuel pump is out. What should I check before letting the mechanic change the pump? Thanks.

Actually, Volvo issued a voluntary extended 10 yr/150,000 mi warranty concerningthe fuel pump on certain Volvo models because oftentimes these fuel pumps crack or fail. As a matter of fact, I just had the fuel pump replaced free of charge on my 2001 S60 after I started noticing hard starts and the strong smell of fuel. To find out whether or not your car is covered under the warranty, you can contact Volvo Cars of North America at 1-800-458-1552 Mon-Fri 8:30 to 5:30. Good Luck!

It does not include the S40.
renejuan: Check the fuel pressure regulator. Remove the black cover off the throttle cable setup. Then find the fuel pressure regulator on the end of the fuel rail. Then remove the vacuum line in the intake from the regulator. I will bet it either smells like gas or is wet from the gas. It is a pretty common problem.
