Default T4 --> 2.0L turbo swap? EXPERTS??

Heya folks, total newbie as I've been a VW guy and bought my first Volvo to fix up for my wife It is a 2003 V40 T4 that overheated. I thought it would be a head gasket but when I go it open the two centre pistons were damaged. Here's my question:

I have access to a 2002 S40 with a 2.0l turbo with only 98,000 km on it for $200. It's vin is YV1VS17K91F637134. I was wondering if I could swap the longblock for the T4 longblock? I'm probably totally wrong but isn't it jus the low pressure version of the T4? Is the engine compression that same just a high pressure turbo? I ran both plates in "carjam" and they both came back with 1.948L engines.

Cheers! Oli

Cool so been doing heaps of research and so far it looks like they will swap, just the 2.0T pistons aren't as robust as the T4's. Both engines are fas2, so it's not an older 1.9l T4. Both engines are 01-03.

Any thoughts? Still hunting... Engine is at u-pick style wreckers so I gotta decide FAST!

Right so more research had indicated that as far as I can tell it's the same engine... part numbers for most parts are the same so I've got that route. Just wondering about the pistons being stronger. Any guesses anyone?

To start, do you know the engine codes you are comparing, ie is the 2002's engine a "B4204T3"? Is your 2003 a T4?

Thanks for weighing in mt6127 The T4 I have is a 2003 with a B4204T5 I believe. I tried to decode the vin but had no luck. I also googled images of the B4204T5 and they look exactly the same. The doner car is a 2002 with a B4204T3 or B4204T4. It looks very similar to what I have. All 3 of those engines have the exact same stroke, bore and displacement. I'm thinking I might chuck the $200 and day to pull it tomorrow...

My 03 S40 had a B4204T5 and rather than do the HG job it was cheaper to drop in a B4204T3. This is US so no coolkid T4. Has had the turbo upgraded to 14T.

my gut is that the blocks are all the same and the T3 refers to the low pressure turbo (ie 12T) and the T4 badged car has the T5 which is the high pressure turbo (ie 14T). Both should have the VVT which was the big step up in 2000. There's difference ECU tunes for each as well.
