Is there an engine safety shut off?
I just replaced a motor in a 2007 S40 and was working out any kinks. On a test drive everything seemed perfect with the exception of an airbag code. Turns out I had a seal that was leaking transmission fluid and the car shut down while driving. It seemed electrical and when I go to start the starter seems to spin but the engine does not turn over at all, zippo. Curious if there was a safety shut off that needs to be reset or something or if there is possibly another problem I need to diagnose? Maybe the leaking transmission fluid and the engine shut down were not related?
What a run of bad luck. Turns out the timing belt went on the new engine. We had considered replacing it but it actually looked new with the engine having only 22,000 miles. I guess we'll do a leak down test to check for valve damage. The new engine was running tight for a few hours!
Oh I think I know the sound he described earlier. So far I've witnessed 5 cars break the timing belt. On all of them with either open valves or bent valves the engine would turn over so easy and fast. One might even mistake that as the starter not engaging. Plausible?
