Default Tire Pressure Sensors, how do they work?

I was wondering how the tire pressure sensors work - where they are and how they communicate back to the car. Are they built into the wheel? floating around? wired? wireless? The reason I'm asking is because I'm wondering what happens if you replace the factory wheels with aftermarket wheels. I need new tires and the 2008 factory wheels are not the nicest design. Plus I'd prefer to put some lower profile tires and upgrade from 16 inch to 17, maybe 18. It's a shame because the 2010 I had as a loaner had a much nicer design than my 2008.
