Transmission Flush Question
Hello, I am new here...Ok i have a 2002 S40 with 40k miles. I know the dealer claims i dont need to get the tranny flushed and filled til at least 100k miles but i had an inspection on the fluid and its burnt. So i want to do a flush and fill. Does anyone know what the OEM tranny fluid is? my dealer said a Valvoline ATF synthetic but i cant get anymore details. I am trying to buy some online, cause the dealer hikes up the prices. I have also heard I can use Mobil 1 ATF 3309. But this is not a sythetic. is it alright to use a non-synthetic when synthetic is OEM and used previously?
please help, i will be satisfied with just the full name of the Valvoline ATF they use...
thanks in advance

You need to do more than simply change the fluid. You have to flush the transmission. I have found that the Volvo dealer charges me a reasonable charge to run 15 quarts or so of fluid through the trans. In addition, the dealer disposes of the waste! For the record, I change the fluid (all fluids) religiously every two years irrespective of mileage.

i plan on flushing the tranny...in fact my dealer is doing the service, i am just trying to get my own fluid to save money. they want $250 alone just for the fluid. when i asked, they told me i only need 8 quarts and that it was some type of Valvoline ATF Synthetic. Is there a product number or a place i can find the exact fluid online? The other fluids I was going to use are the Mobil 1 ATF 3309, which isnt synthetic, and then there was also just a Mobil 1 ATF synthetic.
hey... the actual flush and fill service was $120-140...the fluid by itself was $250 which is outrageous, making the total near $400. thats why I am tryin to find the fluid myself, which they suggested I do, and have them do the service. i just dont know which exact fluid to buy
this way it will by $200 max
this way it will by $200 max
I just pulled my service file. I paid $122.26 for the Volvo dealer to change the fluid in a c70. It takes much more than eight quarts!! Try double that! Your dealer is scaming you but by the same token I recall horror stories being told on this forum by those who had their fluid changed at the Instant Oil type garages! Incidently, that was 29 Nov 04 when the fluid was changed.

$122.26 for parts and labor?? I am positive they are trying to screw me, but I dont trust indepenedent mechanics, or chain oil-changing places at all. Would I be safe to buy a full case of the fluid, and have them do it? I really just need the name of the fluid i should use
Yes,that was the total cost at the Volvo dealer. I note that you reside in St. Louis. Surely there is another dealer close by that could perform this service. It does not take long..............indeed you can wait while it is being performed and so a drive to another city is not out of the question.
Reg.
P.S. If TECH responds to your question, you may learn that you have a G.M. transmission in your auto which would enable you to have this service performed at a G.M. dealership.

The S40 Transmission is the Same one REG has in his car. The GM transmission is only in the S80's and the Newer S60's and V70's.
I forget for sure if it is synthetic fluid or not in those Tranny's.
I will try to find out MON. and I will tell you which fluid we use.
