Default Transmission Slipping

Hi,
I've had my 2001 1.9T for almost 3 years now. Ever since I've owned it, the transmission would occasionally slip. It would do it maybe once a month at the time, so I did not think much of it (thought it was likely not mechanical but something with the electronic transmission control). My mechanic told me not to worry too since I have an extended warranty (great I said!). As of lately though, this slip has been occurring on a more than weekly basis. The slip is very smooth and there is no grinding noise or clunk at all.... it's just like the transmission falls into neutral for a split second and everything is back to normal. It usually happens on light to medium acceleration. I had the dealer check it out and of course it did not happen on the test drives. So they ran a diagnostic and found and error code (TCM-29) when trying to update the transmission’s software. They told me I need a new Transmission Control Module (part# 30644070) as per a Volvo service bulletin. Has anyone had any experiences with electronic versus mechanical transmission issues and know if this makes sense, or is it a mechanical fault?
Thanks, in advance

my '02 did what I think you're describing.... from 1st gear, it would then rev up to about 3,000 rpm as if it fell into neutral and then fall back to where it should be and would be fine.

Took it in at the time (about 2 years ago) and they replaced the TCM and its been fine since. Get it covered under warranty. It's listed as a $600.00 part. You're on extended warranty so its going to cost you something....

hey dlk1,
Just to let you know that I got the TCM changed last week. It slipped again the same day, then twice the day after (smaller slips). It's beek OK for a week now (fingeres very tightly crossed). When you got your fixed, did it resolve the issue right away? or did the TCM have to "relearn" how to shift? (this is what the dealer told me). I somehow have the feeling that I'm not out of the woods yet.

The cost to change it under Extended warrenty was only the 100$ deductable (thank god - otherwise about 800$)

Thanks!

Once the TCM was replaced, it has never happened since (3 years later). I believe they did a software update at the time.

Thanks dlk1,
I will check to see if i holds up (so far it's better for a week, but we'll see). If not, I'll have to convince them it's my tranny (might be a harder case to sell). Maybe the way I drive confuses the TCM - maybe I need a heavier foot hehe.
Thanks again!
