TRYING TO UPGRADE AIRFILTER
Hi i,m looking for some info on putting a sporty air filter into my vovlo s40 2001 1.8L. can it be done? And what website could i buy the filter on, i don,t want an induction kit just the filter.
I know the cone shaped filters make a sporty noise, but do the flat panel pipercross filters make any?
And will it do any damage to the engine if i do short term or long.
please help
jeff

Ok well the stock airbox is the best setup, since no heat can reach the filter.
1. Get a cone filter that doesn't use oil on it, and slap it on your MAF. This will get you your sporty sound, plus in the Summertime loads of heat soak which is really bad.
2. A panel filter will not get you that sporty sound, since it is inside an enclosed box. It probably makes the sound, but you cannot hear it.
You have a few options. A. Get an EST intake kit with what little heatshield they provide with it. B. Get a cone filter and creat your own heatshield. C. Just get a panel filter and be done with it. D. Do the Slater intake system which I posted his writeup on how to do it in another thread on the forum.

Thanks i think i,l try the cone filter attached to the MAF.
Will it damaged the engine in anyway short or long term?

Try finding a cone filter that doesn't use oil. I think the APEXI one doesn't.
Just remember your going to get heatsoak like a bat out of hell, so be forewarned about it.
I agree with you S70................his performance is going to suffer big time unless he 'closes off' the hot air induction with some home made baffling. Not a good idea to suck in hot air! In fact, we used to run our gas line through a 'cool box' which was a can filled with ice cubes in an effort to keep things cool when racing. Hot air sucked into the engine is simply going to kill any performance that the less restrictive air cleaner is going to offer and then kill more performance simply by sucking hot air! The stock air cleaner draws it's air supply from cool air in front of the radiator (next to it) and it is placed there simply for the reason that the engine needs COLD air!
