Hey,
I want to get a turbo 1st gen for myself.
I have seen a bunch of treads here that talk about what to look for and how horrible of a experience its to own a volvo, but I would like to know more about badges, trim levels, engines, what Can I expect from a turbo model. I live in Central America so I belive a NA import would be more common around here, we do get EU imports in here, I know its no Rwd turbo 5speed brick, but I want to have fun with it.

I think with the 1st gen was a S40T and the S40 T4 well thats in EU and Africa one a low pressuure and the T4 high pressure , the first gen was a mitsubishi motor really good motors and in my opinion better that the 2nd gen that was ford , I had the S40T for 2 years power ok but when I drove a Gen 2 T5 had to change was another level , We have owned this car for close to 17 Years , still good

From a US market perspective, all gen 1s were 1.9T low pressure turbos (no T4 HP, sorry to say.) the Gen 2s are all 2.4is (naturally asprirated) or T5 (5 cylinder turbos, common to other models like the S60). T5s are relatively common in the US but I haven't looked for build stats on what percent of sales were NA vs Turbo.

Again for the US models the autos are all Aisins (supplier to Toyota / Lexus) the Gen1's 2000 MY had the Aisin AW50 4 speed and the 2001 to 2004s have the AW55 5 speed auto. Manuals were the M56 - but not too many of those came to the US.
The Gen 2s started with the AW55 5 speed then went to the Aisin TF80 6 speed (not sure what year). Manuals started with the M56 manual, then went to the M66 Manual. Not sure what years had the Renault manual transmissions, I suspect that was for the pre-2000 euro models with smaller engines or diesels.
The 2000s were an odd year with some one year only parts so I'd shop 2001 or newer.
