I have a 2009 Volvo S40 my driver's door handle won't work from the outside but opens fine from the inside I've taken the handle off and there's nothing broken on it can i take the inner metal panel off to gain access to the inner parts of the door mechanism to see if the cable is broke

 

have you popped off the door card yet (I'm sure there's a vid on Youtube if you've never done this before)? here's a diagram for the components

You should be able to access from the inside with the card off.
