What's this light on the dash?(2001 S-40)
Guys, I have a 2001 S-40 w/ 110,000 miles on it.. When I start the car , no light appears on the dash..But as soon as I put my foot on the brake a light comes on the dash..It is an exclamation mark(!) in a circle that has lines radiating out from it.. I think it has something to do with the brakes but don't know and I can't find it in the manual... Any ideas???? Thanks
It's the bulb failure warning light. It comes on when the brake pedal is pressed if there is a defective brake light bulb. Check your brake lights - either a burnt out bulb or a bad connection caused by corrosion in the socket.
If the brake fluid is low (or other brake issues) a light will come on that says "BRAKE"
The exclamation point with the radiating circle is a brake light bulb failure.

Bulb failure warning light
The light will come on if one of the brake light bulbs are defective when the brake pedal is pressed.
Check the fuse and bulb. See sections "Replacing bulbs" and "fuses".

If the light comes on while driving or braking, stop immediately, open the hood and check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. See page 116 for reservoir position.
If the control lamp still stays on, the EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) is not working.
Drive to your Volvo dealer. See ABS control lamp and also page 73.
Canadian models are equipped with this warning light:
