Follow ES6T's advise on your other post and get the timing rechecked properly first.
It's almost sure to be the timing wrong due to cam pulleys out of alignment with the timing marks or even the camsensor set up wrong.
Way cheaper than a new engine that may not be needed.
How did the crankcase get broken thru a flooding?
Driven into a ditch or something?
Look at this link for general info.
It may give some clues as to what has happened.

Thanks for the information. That's a likely scenario give that my mechanic doesn't have the Volvo tools. My friend is a good mechanic but limited Volvo experience. This was a flood damaged Volvo and it's not completely certain how the oil pan was cracked or the extent of the flood. This is what has made me feel that an engine may be the safest way to go, but I'd experiment a bit before making the call and spending the $$. The engine was flooded but the rest of the car is clean with no water damage. The engine was obviously started under water and possibly, but not certainly, run with no oil. I just hate to keep tossing money at this only to find the engine is junk anyway.

Sorry, but a good mechanic would know that a backfire is not caused by something in the cooling system or oil system. If the head was replaced and the oil pan was replaced, I don't know where else he thinks there could be "stuff" in the engine causing problems.
