Default Whiter/brighter headlights

I've tried HID setups (bulbs intermittently won't start), LED bulbs (keep throwing 'low beam bulb out' codes), blue bulbs (actually work for whiteness, but keep burning out sockets/wiring), in an attempt to get a brighter light path and whiter look. I hate how yellow the stock bulbs look and they seem to throw a very dingy, dim light path. Does anyone have any suggestion on which aftermarket bulbs have seemed to work for them in these capacities? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

you've hit on all the problem areas... "blue bulbs" or super whites (like the PIAAs) come in various wattages - with the down side that if you go more than the standard 55w you risk wiring/sockets heating up etc. You can try something like the PIAA 55W super whites to get the whiter color but may not see as much of an improvement as true HIDs. If you want to go with higher wattage you should wire in your own relays (so as to not risk the CEM) and find better sockets). The next option is HIDs - true Xenons require a ballast and it sounds like you've done after market kits that may have wiring issues or not enough voltage to start the arc. You may want to try to find an OEM set up (used?) as an option if you can't find a high quality kit. Finally, the most practical may be to check the condition of your lenses. If you highlight lenses are scratched up or foggy that may be the place to start.

Thanks, mt. I never considered an OE HID setup. Any ideas on where I'd source one?

If you decide to go with the 850 kit for the 9005/6 bulbs, post up your outcome. As noted there are after market kits complete with ballast and HIDS4U seem to do a good job of packaging up the wiring. I'd look at some boards to see what people say about reliability etc. Just make sure you note your car's headlight style - ie H7s or 9005/6s with two bulbs vs one etc.
