0 s60 charging system
Good day all,
I have 01 s60 base with 140k. Over the past 2 months I have replaced the battery and gone through 2 alternators ( we are assuming the first had a faulty regulator). I am still getting battery drain while driving. When the car turns on the volts reach 14 and then quick drop to close 12 and stay around that. I have tested both at the battery and with a cigarette lighter volt meter. Both have the same results volts go up and then quickly down. I am leaning towards a problem with ground circuit.
Does anyone know a simple way to test this? Since volvos infinite wisdom placed the battery and alternator on opposite sides of the car. Also, is this possibly a computer issue? I am under the assumption that the alternaor is hard lined to the battery but I can't find a diagram to confirm.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's been a while since I've reviewed the charging system on these cars, but I want to say that there is a single wire that when energized, tells the voltage regulator that it needs to start charging. These alternators don't necessarily charge the battery at all times.
I'm not sure if that info will help at all, but I don't have any more info with me at the moment. If you still need help later, I can probably give you more detail. Otherwise, maybe someone else will chime in and fill in the blanks.
Anyway, I'd start by making sure that wire is connected properly, not corroded, and is operating as expected.
P.S. This is all based off what I remember from working on my '02 S60... so it may be different on your '01.

Well, the wire that I'm talking about is most likely controlled by one of the many on board computers, though I can't say for sure right now.
I'm going to be busy tonight, but tomorrow I should be able to get you the info that you need.
Alternatively, you can utilize "The Google Machine" to find a program called VADIS, download, install, and have EVERYTHING you ever want to know about your car at your fingertips.
