I would like to examine / replace the cabin air filter. Where is the filter located and what, if any panels, do I need to remove to look at the condition of the cabin filter?

If you look on the passangers side under the dash you will see two torx scews securing a plastic panel. Remove those screws and the panel. Once the panel is removed you will see a black box with 4 additional torx screws. Your cabin filter is located inside of that. A warming. When you go to purchase a cabin filter there are two variates, a small and large one. The size determined by the type of climate control system you have. Small filter is for manual climate control. Large is for auto climate control. Your volvo parts guys will be glad to help you out here if you need further information on it.

 

Dont forget you have to remove the panel on the passenger side bottom kick panel attached to the center console, there are two plastic "screws" on the panel, rotate them and remove this panel prior (i think) to pulling off the cover under the glove box. If you have the auto climate control, you will need a carbon filter (big one) if not you will need the regular one, or just pull the filter and get the part number.

I change the filters all the time and never remove the passangers side panel. [sm=hiya.gif] Different strokes for different folks I guess.

 

We'll Volvo did a dandy job of packaging the cabin air filter. I found it but having to remove two panels, side panel first because there are fingers that interlace with the under the glove compartment panel, is a bit excessive. Using a T-25 torx bit and a lot of finesse to loosen / remove the front two torx screws is a bit of a chore. But, now that I know that I need a small torx rachet set, that certainly would have made the job easier. Special ordered the filter through a local auto parts store. Thanks for all the help.

 

The best deal I could find was on Ebay. Free shipping and only $11.99. Its the original OEM Filter, I think this guy has 6 more available. Item # on ebay stores is 170045062886.

 

Wow an easy change and the old filter was NASTY! Gotta do the wife's 9-5 now which looks a little more involved

 

As Cornfed said (hey, that rhymes! :-) - the thicker filter is charcoal activated, and it is for the cars with ECC and IAQS - You can tell if the car has the Interior Air Quality System by looking at the recirc button - either it says "AUT / MAN" and has 1 green and 1 amber LED (with IAQS) or just a standard recirc button with a single LED. The filters only fit in the correct slot - if you have IAQS, the thick filter will fit in the slot closest to the firewall, the thin one without IAQS goes in the slot closer to you. Such fun, eh?

Don't forget that there is a timer mode activation (not available with IAQS). Press and hold the recirculation button for at least 3 seconds to activate it. The amber LED will flash five times. In timer mode, each time the recirculation button is pressed, the climate control system will recirculate the air for 5-12 minutes, depending on the outside air temperature, and then revert back to fresh air. Works very well in SW Florida heat!

 

luke8_8, would you please tell me more about it? Which exact button do you press to activate the timer mode? On the A/C console or somewhere else? I don't see the recirculate button. My Volvo is 2005 S60 2.5T.

 

If your recirculation button has a picture of a car with the words MAN & AUT between it, then you have IAQS, and the Timer Mode is not programmable. If your recirculation button has just a car on it with a LED light to the left then you do not have the IAQS and the Timer mode is programmable. The recirculation button is located an inch above the ON/OFF A/C button, hold for three seconds. If it flashes for 5 seconds, timer mode is on. Hold again for three seconds and a steady light for 5 seconds says the system has returned to normal. Keep in mine that there is a timer mode memory, so if you turn off your Volvo while the timer mode is active, it will still be active when the car is restarted.

But the best part about the S60 A/C system is that the A/C is momentarily disengaged during full-throttle acceleration.

 

I'm a little confused, I'm about to buy the charcoal filter as I have the IAQS system. So do I just buy the charchoal one and not the normal skinny one?
