i had a similar problem with my 2004 s60. if you dig under the dashboard and behind the glove box, you will be able to take apart the entire blower assembly. there is a plate with a bunch of circuits and transistors attached to the blower assembly. that is usually where the problem is. you can find a used one on ebay for around $60.00 (!!!). this is what i did, and it works just fine. just look for "blower motor", because the parts stores usually don't separate them.
