Just purchased a 2001 s60 5 speed automatic for my daughter with 80k on it. The fluid smells burnt/old and I plan to do a flush and change. How much fluid does the tranny take?

I keep reading post on this site about fluid types and cost, I do all the maintenance on my vehicles but like to see photo links if ya can recommend any.

I think the last time I flushed mine it took 14 quarts. If you search the forum transmission fluid gets discussed quite frequently. If you can find a mobil oil distributor get a case of 3309. It's much cheaper than from the volvo parts dept. The easiest way to flush is pull the lower hose from the cooler on the driver's side of the radiator. Put a short piece of 1/2" clear hose over the end fitting and start the motor until the fluid flow slows. Fill trans and repeat. The lower fascia comes off with two bolts then let it roll down and pull back. There are "tabs" molded into the fascia that slide into slots in the bumper.

 

When I flushed mine few months ago it took 14qts to get to a clean red ATF. Since I have a Toyota dealer near by I bought the Toyota T IV fluid which is exactly the same as the mobil 3309 or the volvo ATF. Doing the flush via the upper transmission cooling line is a very easy job. The only "tough" part was to get the green connector out. I suggest that you get the IPD ATF flushing kit http://www.ipdusa.com/product.asp?st...hStartRecord=1
It comes with a replacement connector and o-rings.

 

Thanks guys, This car didn't have a owners manual with it and I was hearing everything from 3.8qts-14 qts guess the low numbers are not including the system drain.

also does this vehicle check fluid level running or turned off?
