Default 2002 S60 Rear rotors badly grooved

My gf got her S60 from carmax, with only 40,000 miles on it, but looking at both rear rotors, they are badly scarred, and both equally, is this typical for this car? it only has 59,000 miles on it now. When have you guys been replacing the pads on the front and rear? thanks!

yeah thats time for new ones, looks like the previous owner didnt change his pads often enough and it ruins the rotors.

yeah thats what i figured, now the fronts are smooth but i figured i would change all 4 pads and the rear rotors, as for brand of pad, i see EBC makes good ones, but i would have to order those, are the ones at a autozone ok? or would I be better off going OEM? or something like a EBC, my main complaint is the amount of brake dust on the fronts. It coats the front wheel.

Here's how to do the fronts. There's a link at the bottom on how to do the rears. http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...ic.php?p=50801

cool thanks for the link! I had gotten the Volvo service program and printed the procedure for the S60. I am just trying to figure out what brand of pad to buy and rear disc. I think the fronts are good, maybe get them turned, but the surface is very smooth.

Stick with Zimmerman or Brembo Rotors, and pads are really up to you.
PBR are nice, Mintex are good, Axxis is also good...ect.

But if you good to a dealer, they will most likely use OEM parts (Brembo/Zimmerman)

I found Brembo at a local parts dealer, wouldnt going to a Volvo dealer be quite a bit more money? Also trying to find ceramic pads for the front to reduce the brake dust.

I've heard that Volvo says not to turn their rotors. Iftheyaresmooth, I would leavethem alone. When I did my pads I used Volvo factory pads. They have been very dusty. I've heard that Akebono ceramic padsare good and very low dust. I have a set on the way for the rear.

Well if you want ceramic pads there are a few options. (I believe they will eat up a "normal" rotor faster than a good aftermark, because they have a higher friction level.)
Try and find some slotted rotors (or cross-drilled)to go with them...you won't regret it .

Why? Are the aftermarket rotors made out of a different material?

I haven't installed them yet. I'm still waiting for them to arrive. I suppose I could post back after I get some mileage on them.

Here's a writeup I did on how to change the rears on my S80. I believe the S60 is similar. http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...11&t=17390

I use the ceramic pads front and rear. Pads and rotors usually at the same time unless it is -20 degrees outside and I will just slap on a set of pads.
Make sure you install the spring on the front calipers correctly! It will go on backwards and destroy your new pads in short order ( I know...). Do one side at a time and compare.
