Default 2004 2.5 T turbo failure

Hi, new to the forum, I just bought a 2004 S60 T AWD with 214000 kms (132000 mi) timing was done at 177,000 (105000 mi). I've had for two weeks and run up about 1000 km (600 mi). I should mention that this is my first Volvo and my first turbo, so I complete newbie! About an hour ago we were driving and the car stated sputtering under throttle at about 1700-1800 rpm, the engine light came on and since I have not had turbo. As this is a new car to me and with no experience I am at a loss. Some searchs indicate a possible PCV issue, while other are electircial or possible cat issues. Last weekend I was at a BBQ and on the Monday I noticed what appeared to be the remenants of a wig hanging out of my exhaust pipe (a girl at the BBQ had a similar coloured one on!) so I thought that someone was playing a joke. Now with limited time in the car and the 5 cyl. eng I am not sure about sounds or idling, so I can't comment on whether this was exhaust packing. After looking under the car, the muffler is on the way out with some rusting separation at the seam.

Rather long winded (sorry), but being a long weekend here (Canada) I can't bring the car in anywhere and don't even know any reputable Volvo specialists. Is there anyway I can narrow the diagnosises, any tips, links etc. that I can educate myself or solve the problem? The car was apparently taken in for regular service and appears well kept for. Any advice is welcomed.

Thanks,

Alan

Ok, all hoses look good, no leaks, fuel pressure is about 58 psi. Idle is really rough, i get the feeling it is missing on cylinders, which is likely the problem. Thing is my mechanics haven't worked on volvos or turbos!

OK got to a scanner, it is 'multiple misfire' then just 1st cylinder misfire. Thanks for all the wonderful advice! I will move forward with new plugs (NGK), new fuel filter, switch coils to see if this solves, if not then move to fuel injectors.

Problem solved, bad plugs all a round, had to replace with NGK, volvo plugs are nearly $170 from dealer. Bad coil on cylinder 1, switched bad coil to #2, code read cylinder #2, anyway ordered 5 new coils from iPD, thanks to posts in other threads for trouble shooting. This is likely my last post here, apparently better to lurk than actually post! Still not sure if hair from tail pipe was from wig or cat!

One more post! Car is running like a dream, 160 KM/H @ 3000rpm engine purrs like a kitten. My only issue is the idp coils are made in china! I was hoping for at least vietnam! Gotta say, for my first volvo I love it. The wife's forester runs 120 km/h @ 3000 rpm, it is also 2.5 L, but non-turbo, I think I'll have to replace hers with the 2.5X!

hi,
i recently baught 2013 modle volvo s60 d4 and i have been problem ever since i took the deleivery of this car. everytime i take the car out for trip the engine losses suddenly the power and there is no turbo afterwards.
first time it happened on 1200 kms and secong on 3000 and third on 4200 kms.
i m worried about this issue as we nearly were saved from big accident as while overtaking the turbo had problem and if the bus coming from ahead had not applied emergency brakes all 5 of us would be in very bad situation.
i baught this car consedring the safety features but the sudden loss in engine performance nearly killed us!!

pls anyone help me to know the best solution to this problem!!!

The car is new enough that you should have warranty on it. Take it to the dealer and let then check it out.

@OP volvo oem plugs are the best, you should be able to get a set for $40 online.

I wouldnt recommend NGK to my worst enemy.
