So my wife's 2004 S60 just went in for 90k mile service and we were told it needs around $3k of work done by the volvo dealer. The car is only worth $5k or so. In your opinion is it even worth putting that much money into this car?
1. Breather Box is clogged and needs replacement ($600)
2. Shocks ($800)
3. Window regulator broke which we knew about ($600)
4. 90k mile service ($675)

I think you should sell your car to me and buy a new one.

LOL, the stuff listed is legit, however, you can beat those prices.
The PCV is a big deal, timing belt will be due soon, 105k I believe. With a 9 year old car, there will be more.
If you can afford a replacement go for it. You can check the value of the car, consider the needed service/repairs and take 1/2 off that cost off the price and sell it real quick. Better than getting low trade in value (all they'll do is clean it up and jack the price up on someone).

I have an 03 s60 and just spent $2,000 to replace the Dim, oil seperator(breather box) which by the way has made the car run great...replace the timing belt as well as the upper and lower ball joints and tie rods.....this car is now sound and will last for years to come...I also have the alternator going and have one sitting here in the box to put on, In my opinion you should spend the money if your happy with the car, you won't regret it...look at buying your parts form one of this sites sponsers FCP GROTON, free shipping on orders over $100 and normally I get my parts the next day if order is placed by like 2....the prices in my opinion can't be beat and if you can't do the work yourself I am sure you can get your local garage to help you out instead of using the dealership! good luck in whatever you decide!

I'm also having this dilemma!
For me, it's the information box (the lights on the dashboard) isn't working anymore / goes in and out $800-$1000+. A front right axle, $800. The brake booster leaking, $1400. New brakes + rotors (normal) $1000+. And a "mysterious" issue with my catalytic converter (who knows $$$ hasn't been checked into fully yet). This all kind of happened at once... regretfully... and I've never ever had this car serviced outside of the Volvo dealership the 6 years I've owned it (over 100,000 miles I've put on it).
Mine is a 2002 S60 with 189,000K miles on it. Overall, I feel the S60 was a really good value and if mine had 90,000 miles on it, I would definitely pay $3,000 or $4,000 to fix it, because they do last up until the 200,000 mile mark.
Bottom line, I would repair it if it has 90,000 miles. You *will* get a lot of use out of it after.

That drivers information module can be fixed for a little over 400 bucks and you can sorta do it yourself. By that I mean remove it, send it off and re-install it. I just had mine fixed by a place in Canada and they were fast and good! I highly recommend them to anyone with that DIM problem. I just can't get my car to start
