2004 S60R and E85
Ok, so I have only had this car for a couple weeks. I decided to try E85 in my car because I heard that you get a lot more power with the turbo, and it is much cheaper than premium gas. So I waited till my tank was empty (Miles till empty 10) and put in 5 gallons of e85. Seemed to run fine, Drove it 15 miles, and it was more powerfull. No check engin light or anything. Then I stopped somewhere for a few hours, and When I drove it, the check engine light came on in a couple minutes... So I filled the rest of the tank with regular gas (87 grade) and disconnected the batt to clear the light. Then it performed awesome. Then in my next tank, I did a 40% e85 and 60% reg. Seems to be working well. So Im thinking of getting a conversion kit on Ebay, so I can run it fully on e85. I figure that even with the 10%-30% gas mileage hit, it will still be cheaper than running premium, and get better performance. Not to mention that I dont want to support the middle east oil companies.
Anyone here try one of these kits yet? If so, what are your thoughts? I know it has been done before, they even use a volvo in the install video. Check it out. The girl is even a babe.
Here is a video about how it will not harm the engine.

Ok, So I got the White Lightning Conversion kit. I put it in, and it works really well. It is crazy. I now have to drive it by barely hitting the gas peddle at all, because it has so much pep. When the turbo kicks in. it really kicks in. Even in Comfort mode. Now, in Advanced mode, it Hauls.
As far as gas millage.. seems to be about the same.
The exhaust smells different. In fact, the property manager for my town home stopped me as I was leaving, because he thought I had a Antifreeze leak, because of the smell. It does have a alcohol sweet smell. The exhaust only has a smell when the car is started.
I have only used 3 tankes of e85 so far, and am lovin it. Although, the last time I went, it costed 4 cents more than Regular. But it was still like 20 cents less than premium.
I Also like the fact that I am not supporting the middle east. When I was filling up, there was a guy there that converts carburetor race cars to use e85. He just loves the stuff, and said that North Carolina is building 2 ethanol plants. I think one is supposed to use Algae. So Hopefully that will drive the prices down. He also told me that where I went, they dont use a winter mix, and that it is truly 85% Ethanol.

Ok, so my engine started running rough while idling, and I put put premium gas in it, and still ran rough. I also got check engine lite sometimes when it was running rough, and I would disconnect the bat for 10 secs to reset it. So when I had just premium gas in it, I disconnected the conversion kit, and the engine ran fine. So I am wondering if the connection on th kit was just not good. I haven't tried connecting it again. The last time I got gas, I put like 30% E85 and the rest 87 octane gas in the car, and it preforms noticeably better than it did on premium (93 octane here). So i might just keep doing that till I get some time to play with it again. Right now e85 is $1.69 a gallon, and 87 octane is $1.77. Premium is $1.97. Doing the 30% e85 seems to be getting the same milage as Premium too.

i really dont see how using a lower octane fuel in a turbo car is gaining you power... it doesnt make sense.. my T5 has NO power with anything lower than 91...
predetonation occurs when running low octane fuel on a high compression engine... i bet your going to bend and or burn up your valves soon ...
also i have not even heard of E85.. we must not here it where i live... its probably methanol mix or something thats not good...
also if you have a 300hp all wheel drive car why are you worried about gas mileage...??

D_jack - E85 is actually "high" octane, just over 100. "85" just refers to the max percentage of ethanol in the mix.
The problem is with ethanol that to acheve a stoichiometric fuel ratio you need to burn more fuel, therefore lowering mileage per gallon.
IMO, if your vehicle's manufacturer does not approve it's use, you should leave it alone.

93 is hard to find in MN, and ALL gas here is oxygenated and has ethanol in it (10%). WI "premium" is 100% dinosaurs, and there is one station by me that sells non-oxy non-ethanol stuff, but it is about a quarter more a gallon over regular premium.
I swear i get 30+ with a 18ft canoe on my roof, going 70. Must be that fresh air up here in MN, not that smoggy DC air! ;0)
