Default 2007 S60 2.5T - timing belt broke

Hello.

The timing belt on my son's 2007 S60 2.5T with B5254T2 engine recently broke. It was running when it broke and he lost power. He was probably doing about 35-40 MPH at the time (guess based on where he was).

Generally, my question is...... Is this worth fixing? Is there good chance that engine is ruined? I can turn a wrench fine so not afraid to dive into to some difficult fixes if it makes sense.

Thanks,
Lee

You will simply have 20 bent valves (and some small no problem dents in the pistons)
Worth Fixing? By a retail shop for many thousand $$. Maybe not depending on mileage and condition of the rest of the car. How old is the radiator? What about the transmission? Any problem with it? Ac compressor/alternator/lower control arms/ball joints/shocks/struts/cv axles/brake rotors/heater fan resistor-motor?
Fix it yourself? A cylinder head R&R is time consuming and a little tedious - but many a DIYer have successfully completed the job. A couple of special tool are needed to align the cams and I would suggest having a competent machine shop (that knows these Volvos) do the valve job and valve adjustment. New head bolts, updated oil pickup tube, probably water pump will be needed.

With the head off you will want to be replacing/cleaning the PCV system, which might include oil pan removal to clean a passage there.

@hoonk Thanks for the response. Probably should've included more information. The car is in relatively good shape, and only has ~130k miles so should have some life left on it. I have replaced front struts and other suspension parts in the last 1.5 years.

Do you know of a good write-up or video on the process for removing the head? Any recommendations for the tools for realigning and locking the cams?

Funnily enough, I replaced the PCV system about 6 months ago.
