Default 2013 S60 T5 Rough at Idle & A Growl at Low RPM

Hi everyone,

So, I just picked up my 2013 S60 T5 from the dealer where it had its transmission replaced (at only 35,000 miles). The problem now, however, is that the car seems to tremble at idle, and it also produces a slight but still audible growl between 1,300 rpm and 1,450 rpm.

I really don't have any ideas what that might be. I'm also reluctant to take it back to the dealer, as it took four visits before they were finally able to produce a proper diagnosis for the transmission (the first three times they insisted there was nothing wrong; then, on the fourth go, they found a leak and decided to replace it).

At any rate, I'd really appreciate any feedback!

Cheers,

Myron

A shudder off idle could be a few things. The short list of things to check in ascending orders of ugliness are:

fluid level, is it low? Low fluid could cause all kinds of not so nice symptoms.

Torque converter:
This item goes between your trans and the engine. It is responsible for transferring power from your engine to your transmission. Did the dealer replace or reuse your old one? If they reused the old one, it may have taken damage from the old trans since it gets its fluid from the transmission. If they replaced it, they may have not seated it fully onto the input shaft or used the wrong converter for your car (stall speed is too low).

You can actually test for a bad torque converter yourself. Start your car and let it come up to temp.

Check your fluid. Apparently the 6 speed in your car doesn’t have a dipstick to check the level. I am not familiar with the trans so I would search the forums or ask someone like Tech to respond on how to safely check the fluid level. I would check the level before I did any additional tests or drove it too much more.

To test your torque converter,
Step on the gas lightly a few times, keeping it below 3000 RPM.
Let the engine idle back down after each rev.
Press down on the brakes, set your emergency brake, and shift into drive. Listen for any strange sounds such as clicking or revving or if you experience any lurching (slipping).

If all seems well, keep your foot on the brake and shift through all the gears including reverse, listening and looking for the same issues after each shift.
Finally, drive your car and note in detail when you feel the shuddering or if you experience any revving (slipping). Take note of when it happens (uphill, downhill, off idle, when hot, when cold, from a stop light, when you downshift etc etc. The more details you can provide the dealer or shop, the easier it will be for them to zero in on the problem.

I hope this helps!
