Default 2015.5 V60 CC turbo 5 Oil Consumption issue

96K on the car, been following the mx schedule recommended by Volvo. Oil consumption between 10K oil changes was great until 80K miles. Only had to add a couple of quarts before the 90K service. Now it has needed over 3 quarts so far (wife added "some" so I can't say exactly how much has been added). Absolutely hate and don't trust my local Volvo dealer's mx department so very concerned what they may say when the car goes in for this issue in 3 weeks (they're swamped). Had it to a local trusted shop but with little Volvo experience and they say there's been 3 service bulletins for this engine. The third supersedes the first two and calls for new pistons and rings. Ouch.

Few questions for you folks. First, is that correct about the service bulletins? Are the replacement pistons/rings a different design to prevent this issue coming back? Part of the reason I was good to go with this engine was because the design had been out awhile and I figured all the issues were out of it. Is there a class action lawsuit against Volvo for this issue? Will Volvo cover any of the cost for my out of warranty car (seriously, please stop laughing)?

If we have the work done, any recommendations on anything else to have looked at while the engine would be out? Timing belt and pulley are due. Water pump? Have the PCV looked at?

Like so many of you, love the car. But not having a Volvo shop I can trust has really made me nervous with this issue.

Volvo has a problem with certain engines in that year range with oil consumption. From what I understand many have been fitted with new pistons rings while under warranty. I believe it has to do with Volvo using 1 piece oil control rings - instead of multiple piece rings. Talk to your dealer about this - see what they can offer. And the engine does not need to be removed to replace piston rings. Timing belt replacement - sure, Replacement is now 105?120?150 in California? Water pump on the 4 cylinder is electric, not belt driven. Same brand as the 335/535 BMWs I used to work on that lasted about 80k miles!

If no help is available from Volvo - How about using it as a nice trade in? (rather than spending $2-3000 on your proposed repairs?)
