Default check engine light

Love my S60 but in the last couple of weeks the check engine light has come on. I put a scanner on the car and it comes back with.

"P0012...."A" Camshaft Position - Timing over-retarded (Bank 1)

can anyone give me any insight on what i need to do to fix it. The car runs fine. no hesitation no rough running. I cleared the code to see how long it would take to come back. it took almost 3 days to a week each time. thanks for the help.

Very respectfully,
Russ

I have had the car a month. No work lately from me or prev. owner. He stated that the last thing done to it was 6 months ago and that was a flash on the throttle body. other than that nothing has been done. i did have the car detailed. could it be a loose senser from when the cleaned the engine bay. not sure which one it would be. when i fill it up i put high octane in it. 93 or higher always. i have not changed the oil since i bought it. I was going to do that soon. i tried to find a manual on it. only thing i have seen is on ebay.

thanks for the help

How many miles?
Has timing belt ever been replaced?
It could be a Cam sensor.
It could be a VVT reset valve.
It could be a bad VVT pulley.
Timing belt might have jumped time.

I cleared the code last night. I have been driving it off and on all day no light yet. I was thinking. I will have to watch it but it seems like on damp or cold days i get it. thanks again for the replies. What is the VVT.

I have an '04 S40 with 40,000 km (28 ish 000 miles) I pulled a P0025 code for B Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank2 ) I cleared the code today and haven't seen it yet. I am also getting some moniters flashing which gives me a yellow code on my reader. My Evaporative System Monitor, Oxygen Sensor Monitor and Catalyst Monitor or all flashing...

Hi Tech,

I should have re-read my message, I guess it wasn't overly clear. Anyway, my INNOVA code reader pulled a P0025 code off my car but it has been running fine. I erased the code and it has not come back since. I have read in different messages that the code may come up due to oil issues or gunk build up on the cams and may be fixed by changing to a higher grade Synthetic oil (I currently use Volvo convential oil) and having the system flushed before the new oil is added. As for the yellow code light, my reader also checks all of the sensors/monitors in the vehicle. My Evap. Sys. Moniter, O2 Sens. Monitor and Cat Monitor are all flashing on my reader - which means there is something wrong with some of my monitor/sensors.... My code reader gives a "Green" "Yellow" and "Red" indication light/code depending on the problems your vehicle may have. Green means good, yellow - minor issues, and red means "sh#t" - get to the garage. Anyway, I'm sure you're familiar with thegadget. My car is flashing yellow due to the monitor problems which may affect the emissions system. I'mnot sure if thecode I pulled and the problems with the sensors are tied in together? Any idea?

Ok here is my update. Another owner told me to make sure that i was adding fuel treatment to my fill ups. He said due to the mixtures that you get at some stations it could be throwing the code. Well not sure if he is 100% right or not but I have not had a check engine light in the last 7 fill ups.

thanks for the help.

I have a 2002 S60. Recently the check engine system light came on. A service station tested it and received a P2112 code. Tac System stuck closed. Does anyone know what this is?
Thank you for your help

Has anyone else had this issue other than Reamstownduddy? I tried starting my S60 2002 the other morning and it started running rough. I turned it off and then started it again with no issue. A little later the check engine light came on (OBDII = P2112), but it is running like normal. I have not tried to clear the error yet.

Default P2112 Code

Yes, I also had the P2112 "throttle actuator stuck closed" code appear yesterday (16 March 2010), but I did not experience any rough running as mentioned in the previous post. I have a 2002 V70 turbo with 60K miles. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back (but that was yesterday and I haven't driven it much sense).

I did some searching and couldn’t find much info on the P2112 code, other than it is related to the electronic throttle actuator. I read somewhere that possible causes include complete actuator failure (and throttle is stuck closed), or dirt and debris in the throttle body causing the throttle to experience resistance and throw the code (this seems to make sense to me). And finally I read somewhere that low voltage could cause throttle sensor to misread and throw the P2112 code (this seems odd as I would assume low voltage would result in many other issues as well)... Regardless, I can't find any definitive information on this.

As a side note, I haven't been driving my V70 much and we have noticed a low battery, but I don't really think this is causing the low voltage or the code. I won't know until I get the code again or have other problems, but a dirty throttle body seems to make sense to me, especially since I didn't get the code again right away after I cleared the code...

I plan to keep driving and see if I get the code again or experience problems.

If anyone has any additional info on the P2112 code, please post it here. If I find anything I will post as well. Thanks.

I would put a fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and fill up the tank at one of the national brands gas stations like BP, Shell, or Exxon. then drive around as normally as the car would allow for at least 50-100 miles or so.

I hope you won't laugh at me when I tell you that I had the same problem of check engine light, and it went away after I put the fuel injector cleaner and drove the car for few days. The light hasn't come back on and it has been close to 3,000 miles since the last episode.

Off course if you feel uneasy about this route, then a check at the nearest deal will be your next option. A much more expensive option, but the next option nevertheless.

Default S60 dtc p0012

2 weeks ago I picked up an 02 S60 for my daughter for when she goes back to school. Within days of purchase the check engine light came on. My scan tool showed the code to be P0012 (Timing retarded bank 1. ) That was Fri. The car was scheduled to have the timing belt changed on the following Mon. (101,000 miles) so I cleared the code and did some service over the weekend (plugs, trans fluid Mobil 3309, changed oil and filter). The car had allegedly been "serviced" by the Mom and Pop car dealer but the oil that came out looked like --ap and the filter was a no name. I put in Mobil One 10W30 and a Volvo filter (oil still looks like new after a week). I had the timing belt done by a reputable garage that specializes in Volvos and let them know about the code. I picked up the car on Mon. and everything seemed fine, but yesterday (Fri) the P0012 came back. Any thoughts on where to start now?
Thanks TP
