Question check engine problem

ive got an ’02 s60 (n/a) in which the check engine light will come on and off. it was on for about a day, then while driving, i look down and its off. after it came back on again, it did the same thing. its no longer on and hasnt been on for about 4 hours, but then again i havent been driving that much today. is this a symptom of a usual problem? should i worry about it? could this be potentially serious? the car seems to me to be driving normally. i would goto my usual mechanic, but i’m afraid they might charge me just for the obd check to figure out what the code of the problem is. also because its not on now, it might not be on when i goto the mechanic and will have made the trip for nothing. any advice, solutions, or suggestions, no matter how big or small, would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Go to your local Advance Auto Parts and check out an OBDII reader. All you need is a driver's license. Write down the codes and search them online, or post them here and I am sure someone will be able to tell you what they mean.

They also check out tools. They are free, but you are charged for the tool's value and refunded when you return it.

Actually both Advance Auto and AutoZone will read your OBD II / check engine light for free in their parking lot. If your car will not start, both have a loaner tool program that you "buy" the loaner tool, take it home, then get a full refund when you return it. Thats good when the car doesn't start. Otherwise, just drive in, ask them to read the check engine light, get the codes and diagnosis. Come back here, post what you found and get the advice of what you really need to fix it.
