chirp noise
Hey guys, i did search this issue but found nothing. When i shift from park to reverse or drive, i get a chirp noise from the engine. I suspect a mount and I replaced the upper rear torque mount but still present. Any ideas?
Thanks for the reply. I don't believe so as I have immediate reverse or drive. It really sounds like a broken mount, i'm just not sure which. I found the top torque mount broken and assumed that was it but it wasn't. My guess is a trans mount or some other lower mount on the front or rear of the engine....
I have the same problem with a V70XC. There's a chirping noise when shifting into drive or reverse AND when making turns. It's most noticeable when the windows are open.
I've put the car on jack stands and listened while a friend shifted the transmission. I could not pinpoint the source of the noise.
I also replaced that top engine mount. I noticed a pile of those broken mounts at a local "Volvo specialist's" shop. I think that's a good indication that they're a high-use item, but not the source of the "chirp".
I paid those guys for 2 hours of labor to diagnose it, but they were unable to tell me anything except that they didn't think there was a problem with the transmission.
I'm inclined to disagree with the Volvo guys. Although I can't say for certain that the chirp is coming from the transmission, the process of elimination seems to point in that direction.
I have heard this same chirp from another Volvo as it drove past on the street, so I think that it may be a common problem.
I'm still searching. I'll post my findings if I ever figure it out.

The Trany mount sounds like it needs to be replaced. It located front end right in the middle of the car .If you get under the car and while the Skid plate is still on you can just see the front part of the mount. Looks like this. Volvo S60 Torque Rod- Engine Mount- Volvo Parts
Very common and also Very easy fix. I would start there.

Sorry guys! I forgot to update this thread. I found the noise- in my case at least was the cv axle bolt was loose. The cv axle is held to the hub with a bolt that can be tightened by simply by removing the wheel center. When i checked the noise on a lift, I saw the hub on the driver side jerking slightly so I hit the bolt with an impact gun and the noise has been gone for some time now.
