Default Cold weather clicking

I have seen this issue posted on this forum before but didn't find a solution. When it is cold outside, once the car (2001 S60 non turbo ) the passenger front door starts clicking and the ambient air temp readout stays blank. Once the car "warms up" which could take 40 minutes, the clicking stops and the temp. display comes on.

The stealership says it's the PDM, and it will cost a total of $715 to fix! $411 for the PDM, $90 to buy the software (new to me), plus labor.

Is there anything that I can do myself to fix...or lessen the cost of repair? Is this issue usually really the PDM?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

BTW, I am VERY comfortable working on electronics (been a car audio/video/security junkie for over a decade).

Thanks again.

It is usually a bad door module that does that. You can replace it your self. It is supposed to be programmed to the car. People have replaced it without the software but I really don't reccomend it.

Thanks Tech! It's better to hear that I can do it myself (minus the programming).

just out of curiosity...is there a "recommended" source for Volvo parts that forum users recommend?

I know I could hit up a salvage yard, but would prefer to order one from a reputable source.

Thanks again!!!

I have the same exact problem. Tech helped me figure it out last year (Thanks!). I got the part from http://www.vandsautodismantlers.com/ for $65 plus $20 S&H. Just remember to have the part number ready. I haven't taken it to the dealer to have the software loaded on it, so I figure that is why the door still doesn't work. I'll worry about that when the summer comes around and I want to lower the windows.

I do have a bit of advice for you:

Don't tell the dealer that you replaced the PDM!! Just ask them to reload it. When I was talking to the dealer I mentioned I had replaced it and I was told that they do not do maintenance on "aftermarket" parts!! I explained that it was OEM and they started adding more fees!

PS: Push the center of the panel clips to remove them... don't pry them out...

Just out of curiosity.

If I get a PDM out of another car (salvage yard) would it still need to be programmed? If so...Why?

I am still trying to understand WHAT the programming does.
