When running car is ok. When in neutral, idle jumps up and down between 800 and 1000 rpm. Until engine stalls. Check engine light is lit continuously

Can you help me with likely solutions?

start by getting the codes via an OBD2 reader. Some stores like Autozone may sell a cheap reader or pull codes for you. Second thing to do is inspect the vacuum lines. What year is your car? There's a few common places where a vacuum leak can crop up. Check youtube for some vids on how to find/detect a vacuum leak. If you have a Volvo 5 cyl you can look at vids for the 850s or V70s as well.

After that, there are a few possible choices - have you done a full tune up recently? Do things change when the car is warm vs cold? Any starting issues? I'd be looking into things like a dirty IAC valve (idle air control valve), dirty MAF (mass air flow ), fuel pressure regulator etc but that's where having codes help.
