Engine Service Urgent Message

Engine Service Urgent Message
I have a 2001 Volvo S60 T5 with 140,000 mile. The engine service required message appeared and shortly thereafter the engine started to surge, the engine service urgent message came on and then the engine went into limp mode ( I believe that is what it is). No service codes appeared, so I'm at a loss as to the cause and what I should do except have the vehicle towed to the dealer approx 20 miles away.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I would apreciate any recommendations. Thanks

Thanks Joe. My fuel level was low, but that was not the problem. Aftere reading several blogs about similar problems, I checked and cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor with no results. Then I towed it to the dealer, McDonalds Volvo and they replaced the ETM under the extended warranty. Runs like a champ right now.

Mine did this today started it back up after a while still have the urgent engine signal and drove it home, gonna have it looked at my gas pedal stopped working, truly scary experience, have 1/2 tank, same car, same everything except a few less miles, have had nothing but problems with my car.
