"Engine System Service Required"

"Engine System Service Required"
I have been getting this warning intermittently since acquiring my '01 S60 T5 6 months ago, yet there is no concrete indication of a problem.
Here is a picture of my instrument panel with the warning on: http://screencast.com/t/eH7VasEgg
One dealer told me it meant I needed an oil change, and another said it was as serious as a MIL (Check Engine Light), and that it sets codes in the ECU, and the car will not pass a state emissions check. These are by phone, of course.
But even with the amber triangle light (and text) on, the scanner says, "No DTCs are currently set, nor is any freeze frame data available." In addition, the Pass/Fail emissions light panel on the scanners says "Pass." A second scanner said "No Codes."
No MIL (check engine light) has ever come on, BTW.
It's a sure thing that if I drive the hour and a half to my nearest Volvo dealer, the text and light will again be out.
IS there a code set that the dealer can read even if the light/text is out? It would be a waste to make an appointment and drive 3 hours round trip if no code is stored, of course.
Is there any way of telling w/o a dealership scanner what is causing it?

I had my code read at a local Volvo specialist, my portable code reader did not find any codes, but theirs came up with the AC pressure sensor faulty, he wasn't sure why it would trigger an "Engine System Service Urgent", but that was the only code the reader could locate. Cost is ~$250 for the part and installation. Kind of annoying as it does not affect how the car drives at all and I dont care about the AC for the next 8 months or so, but the message wont go away unless I fix it...

"engine system service required" message
Got this message today on my V70XC (2000). New one on me, so I checked the XC forum......
... seems quite a common one with no clear explanation.
HOWEVER, many people seem to experience this just after filling up with fuel.
Guess when I got the message? Yep, as soon as I started up to leave the petrol station.
I'll contact my garage tomorrow and feed back if I get any sensible answers!

No Powertrain DTCs or Freeze Frame Data is Presently Stored in the Vehicle's Computer
I have 05 Volvo V70 2.5T, a month ago it started a surge when it was idling at 650 rpm then down to 550 rpm then return to 650 rpm. So I went to to my local auto parts and used their OBC II and it came up with what I put in the title of this message. Well I tried erase a few times but kept coming back, so I ran everything in the OBC II and it showed "engine oil level at 79.69%" and pointed to the "NOx/SCR EGR/VVT 02 SENSOR/HEATER MONITOR" and most likely it's the upstream 02 sensor and a oil change and fill the tank and add Sea Foam oil & fuel treatment. It should cost less $100 for 02 sensor, Sea Foam oil & fuel and a oil change I use Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5w30w, but you use any oil you choose.
