Default Help the new guy please...buying an S60

Hey all, just wondering if you experienced Volvo-ers can clue me in. I'm currently considering the purchase of an 04' S60, 5 spd. Let's hear your thoughts/opinions. This would be my first 5 spd and first Volvo.

I've not heard a lot of bad things about them at all. My wife has a friend that has been loyal to the make and they love them.

Yay or nay?
Premium fuel only?

Thanks guys

If you can get a full service history and it has been maintained properly I vote yes. You can probably get by with mid grade. Mine is not a turbo and I run regular with no problems whatsoever.

I just got a 2005 2.5 T that is fantastic. 96,000 miles was a concern, but it runs great! I just flush the transmission fluid to be a preventative measure.

2003 s60 with 143,000, previously owned a 98 960 wagon that had 258,000 and was still running strong when i sold it...I will never drive any other vechicle other than my wife's suv again volvo's are one of the safest and well built cars....Volvo 4 Life! I think you should go ahead and buy this car, hopefully you can get your hands on the maintenance records so you have an idea of how the car has been maintained and if you do regular maintenance your car will last you for years to come, they are great handling cars as well.....good luck in whatever you decide!!!

Great input, thanks a lot everybody. I took what you said and made a deal on it today. I'm going to pick it up on Friday after work. Will post pics later. Thanks again!

I also just purchaed a 2004 S60 AWD with 91k on it. It is in MINT condition and looked to be very well maintained. Bought from a local Independent high end used car sales and service (merc, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, etc). Owner is a Volvo master mechanic since 1983. Day 2, took a 800 R/T run to Washington DC. Loved it! 30mpg!

Hey there I see you're in Westlake. I grew up in Fairport/Painesville, can't wait to come back.

I picked up a 2007 S60 2.5t with 80k miles for $10k a few months ago for my daughter while she is off to school. I wasn't looking to buy a Volvo and frankly didn't want to give my daughter such a nice looking car—trying to keep her humble some how. However, I couldn't pass up the deal. After kicking the tires and changing the oil, I drove it 1,200 miles to drop it off to my daughter.

After that ride and giving it a close inspection, it is going to be difficult to not buy a Volvo for my next car. Probably an S80 since I need a little more room.

I'm sure you will enjoy your first Volvo.

Im about to buy a 2002 s60 153,000 miles..I love the look of this car and after test driving the car I noticed a few problems but the dealer (non volvo) insisted he would have it all fixed and the car checked over again to confirm everything is good to go... This is my first volvo and I'm sure hoping its a great experience.

1> hesitant takeoff from stop (when i push the gas to floor, though while on interstate it took off great while cruising)
2> moon roof seems not to work right and clicks
3> driver window doesnt go up or down
4> broken cupholder lid on middle console
5> leather wearing out on drivers seat

I have a 2001 T5 Turbo, bought it in '04 with 47K on it, now have 137K on it. My cupholder lid broke last year - it was getting looser over time and a hinge broke off. It seemed flimsy from day 1 (later years have a nice sliding door) and the top of it was fading and scratched - and since I always used the cupholders anyway, not having it closed is no big deal.

Just the other day I found a thread here about the moonroof - mine was doing something similar - and there's an easy way to recalibrate it so it closes tighter with no clicks.

Mine is always a bit hesitant from start - you don't say if your's is a Turbo or not, but I've always assumed mine car's lagging first few seconds from a stop was due to Turbo lag. Because after that its quick!

Good luck!

It's not a turbo but the dealer fixed the hesitation so it runs better. The stereo is awesome in it!!
