How does seat/mirror memory work in 2016?

I have a V60 with the seat memory buttons on it. I have set #1 for myself (of course) and #2 for my wife who is about a foot shorter than me! Firstly, it would be nice if I could just tap the button once to have it make all the seat and mirror changes, but I can live with the fact that I have to hold it down the full duration.
However, ONCE IN A WHILE, I'll go to get into the car after she has been driving it, and the seat will start making the changes for me without me even touching a button! How does it know this? Is it because my key was closest to the drivers door when we got in? And why does it not do this ALL THE TIME (does it only about one out of 3 times)? Is there any documentation on this function?

Thanks for the clue, es6t! I had already read my entire "owners manual" and found nothing. But you made me think about checking more online and I found a pdf of the "web edition" of the manual HERE. Who knew it existed? My owners manual has 168 pages but the pdf version has 390! I was able to find what I wanted on page 81 plus a whole lot more great info! I have some reading ahead of me now. Thanks for the tip.
