Default I just paid 950 to have my timing belt replaced

The dealer just guilted me into fixing my timing belt. They charged 950. Was I ripped off?

Just the belt kit? Or the serpentine belt and water pump too?

What year? Turbo or non turbo?

If it was just the timing belt, idler and tensioner, you probably overpaid.

Angry Need timing belt also

I have 82 thousand on my v70 ,2008, and I am concerned i need this too according to what I have read here and other places. I wanted to buy my own parts but don't know enough about it to buy them myself. I was charged nearly $200.00 for a 7500 mile oil change and check up, and I supplied the oil and filter. I am now asking for a written estimate before I do anything !

Depending on the labor rate, it should be around $600. You are sure that is all that was done? I've seen customers come in thinking we ripped them because they didn't understand what the service was. For example, a 105,000 mile service includes a timing belt, oil change, rotation, serpentine belt, fuel filter and pollen filter. People know it as a timing belt service. So if that was what you got, it wouldn't be bad. If you want to PM a copy of the invoice I can take a look if you aren't sure.

Fred- the 2008 has a 120,000 mile timing belt interval so you're fine for a while.

I've said it before ask questions. Ask to see the labor time guide. Ask to see the parts prices. Ask to see what is wrong before buying it.

2008 V70 should have the 3.2LT six cylinder. No timing belt.

Thanks for your responses. Even though Volvo recommends to change this at over 100,000, I am still worried about not changing it sooner. Based on pictures and experience of one of our members, he recommended not more than 75 thousand. I don't have a local dealer. The nearest is 60 miles away and I am looking for a trustworthy independent , if that is possible. Any advice would be appreciated.

That is a ton of money. My car is at the dealership right now and they just quoted me for $600 for a new timing belt. This does not include the water pump components which was told "we will know if it needs to get replaced only when we get to the timing belt".

Fred- I completely read over the fact you have a V70. The 2008 V70 does not have a timing belt, so you have nothing to worry about.

As for doing other models as early as 75k, that is really unnecessary unless the car is old 10-12 years).

I can get the timing belt kit (timing belt, water pump, tensioner/pulleys/etc.) for $125 on eBay (2002 S60 non-turbo).

Maybe, but a shop is going to charge you a couple of hours of work for the service. Its not an easy process.

Not maybe, they actually have the kit listed on eBay. But like you said, you still want to get a professional to do it.
