Hi, I have a 2002 S60 2.4 (non-turbo) with a manual transmission. I notice a fairly loud knocking / ticking coming fromsomewhere inthe drivetrain when the transmission is under load. The sound ismost noticeable in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear; but I also hear it(quieter) in 1st.It is equally loud when accelerating and decelerating in gear. The sound is not there when revving the engine in neutral which(I hope)eliminates engine issues.

Has anybody experienced this problem? Does anybody know where to start troubleshooting, or what to check to get closer to the root of the problem... and lastly, does anybody know what it costs to have a transmission rebuilt (worst case scenario)?

In case anybody actually read this post andwas wondering what the outcome was... the problem wasthe transmission... 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears were completely destroyed.

Just so you know, there are no re-build parts available for volvo manual transmissions, which left me with 2 options: buy a new one from Volvo, or try to find a used one. Luckily I was able to find a used one with only 2400 miles on it(which I sourced through World Wide Auto Parts) for $1400, and then it cost me another $800 to have installed. In hind sight, the actual wrecker who had thetransmission sold it to WWAP for $800, so they charged me a $600 finders fee.

All in all, the bill came to $2400 including all taxes and shipping, which is more than I would have liked to pay, but still $1600 less than the dealer wanted to charge me.

Yes, anytime that the car was not under load it was fine (neutral revving, clutch engaged, etc)

 

WOW first manual tranny I have heard of that broke.
