Default Need help please: key will not turn

2004 S60 2.5T: The last few days,
the computer would comes on at the beginning
while I tried to start the engine with: Ignition prohibited, or something
of that nature, while I tried to start the car.
This went on for a few days, not all of the time but just enough
to be annoying. Well, yesterday, finally, it just wouldn't start at all.
Actually, the key would only go into the first click (I) and wouldn't
go into the second click (II) therefore I couldn't get to the starter.
Please advice as to possible problem!!
Thanks so much.

I would think it has to be something with the steering, brake pedal, or shifter interlock if the key wont turn. Try putting a little pressure on the steering wheel while you're turning the key.

Default Will give it a good yank and see, thanks!

Thanks, I shall give it a try.
By the way, how about the tumbler/cylinder for
the ignition key?
Could that be the culprit?
The thing is I could turn the key into the first click,
but no more.
Thanks again for your help.

The cylinders commonly go bad. But you have to replace the assembly.

So it is not enough to just replace the cylinder alone?
This is the first time I have encountered problem of
this sort, but then, this is pretty much my first Volvo.

Yes you have to replace the assembly. Basically it just comes mounted in the aluminum housing.

Thanks,
i went by the dealer and saw the diagrams of the unit.
also found a local repair shop which specializes in volvos.
it seems to be a bit more complicated than i wanted to contend with
on my own, so i better let the shop do this.
they gave me a quote of 180 for the labor,
which seems reasonable?
the replacement part itself is about 300 dollars.
