Default oil filter cover

Ok, My first time changing oil on my S60. I got the plug out, it was tight but easy enough, but does anybody have any tips to get an overtightened oil filter cover off? I have the special wrench, and its so tight it just keeps slipping around the cover after excessive force to remove it!

I think for now I'll just put in the new oil and do the filter later. I've been fighting this for an hour now and I'm afraid i'm going to break the cover or round it off.

Any tips would be great!

My guess is either your you have the wrong size or you cap is worn down. Take a look, as it might be time for a new one.

Try a strip of sandpaper or shim stock to fill the gap between the socket and housing.

I have the correct filter wrench that the parts sites called for my year of S60. I think the problem is that it is worn down like Choguy03 mentioned. I will give the sandpaper or shim idea a try to get it off, then get a new cap just to be safe. I'll let you know how it works out.

How much oil will I loose changing the filter without draining the oil first? am I better off getting a new drain pan and draining the oil, then re-filling the car?

Oil Filter covers easily get worn on S60's. You could break the cover and easily get a new one. And also look out if the oil filter was crushed.
