S60 air filter

I've been trying to replace my engine air filter. I have a 2002 Volvo S60 with a 2.4L engine (no turbo). Two part stores looked up the filter I need, but both times they were about an inch longer compared to my old filter. The filter for the 2.3L engine is the correct size, but it has a wire mesh on the filter, which my old one doesn't. Has anyone else had a problem with this, i.e. the part stores seem to have the wrong information for the correct filter size?
Also, can anyone recommend a filter to increase horsepower? Are there any downsides to doing so?
Thanks
-Jimbo

Hey Jimbo,
I had the same problem - or so it seems. I order all of my filters through napa-online.com and they came out the right size. Even then they seemed hard to cram in there.
I gave up on that and switched to an A&M aftermarket intake and used a conical K&N air filter. It seems a little louder but otherwise it's great.
